Would residents like to see a dog park in ANC2C02?

The Shaw Dog Park group's initial application for a dog park on the grounds of Shaw Jr. High School has been denied in a recent letter from DPR. The Shaw Field on the grounds of Shaw Middle School is managed by DC Public Schools and is apparently not going to be made available for use as a dog park. However, the Department of Parks and Recreation will consider developing a dog park in one of 2 locations within my ANC 2C02 single member district. One location under consideration would be the area on the northeast corner of the Kennedy Playground. An alternate site would be the now paved, area next to the Bundy Field; this location is a National Parks Service property that DPR manages.

DPR is prepared to accept and review an application for two alternate dog park locations: 1) adjacent to Bundy Field — located on P Street, NW between 5th Street and New Jersey Avenue, NW, and 2) the treed area in the northeast corner of the Kennedy Recreation Center grounds, 1401 7th St., NW. Both of these alternate locations are operated by DPR and would not conflict with current uses.

I will be attending a meeting next week with George Kassouf, Councilmember Jack Evans and other interested community stake holders to discuss our next steps in bringing a dog park to Shaw.

According to DPR regulations, not only will their final decision require local community input and my sign off, but a community group will have to be organized to take responsibility for some managerial duties for a dog park. As far as I know these are the only sites in Shaw being considered and other areas in Shaw have already been discounted for one reason or another. There is a discussion about a dog park proposal for a site in the area of 10th St north Massachusetts Avenue. But I think residents in Shaw might prefer something more convenient. Since the Bundy area is on the eastern edge of my SMD and one block west of New Jersey Avenue, I would welcome input from neighbors on the eastern side of New Jersey who would likely use and be impacted by such a park as well.

I realize that some residents at 2nd Northwest Coop, to the south of the Bundy area have expressed concerns about that location and hope some of them would share their concerns as well. I know there are dog owners at 2nd Northwest Coop who I hope will share their thoughts. We can also follow up an online discussion with a public meeting in the near future to further address the issue.

I would love for it to be located on a portion of the grounds at the Kennedy Recreation Center.

I think that either location would be great. However, the Kennedy Playground location probably is the best candidate as it would take much less work to turn into a dog park. Plus it would put to use space that seems to be rarely used: while the basketball courts, playground and baseball field get plenty of use, rarely does the treed area seem to be used.

Could the KP be used until the other site is fully developed into a dog park? There would be more eyes on the street — in what is still a crime ridden stretch of P St — by making more constructive use of wasted paved over space at Bundy. We should start planning the development of unused park spaces as soon as possible.

Where's the kitten/cat park going to be?

question:
how much time will the kennedy site take and how much on the bundy? 3 years or so?

Either site is convenient for me, so I'm happy either way in that sense, but it seems like the Bundy site is much less utilized at the moment than Kennedy. Might as well make use of the space.

Either location would be great, but I think the bundy location is perfect. That paved lot is becoming an eye sore and we need people out walking their dogs to increase the sense of community and serve as a deterrent against crime that is all too frequent in our community.

I think either location would be great for the animal lovers. HOWEVER MY CONCERN IS. Will it be kept clean abd by who, I would hope not tax dollars. I have expressed before, I feel the cleanup is the responsibility of the animal owners. Suggest there is a group formed to plan for the maintenance. good luck. Dottie

The Shaw Field has been designated as a dog Park per Councilmember Evans' recent announcement. For all dog exercise areas, a local community group of volunteers must be organized to do much of the management and be responsible for the cleanup before DPR considers a location for such use. Such a group has been formed and successfully worked to have the Shaw Field approved for such use by DPR.
I am pleased to announce construction has began on the new dog park near Shaw Jr. High School site — and at my request the project has been expanded to 15,000 square feet. On a walk-thru the community in September, Mayor Adrian Fenty promised the Shaw/Logan neighborhoods this much needed urban amenity, which was originally slated to be 10,000 square feet. Working with the Department of Parks and Recreation, after numerous requests from constituents in these Ward 2 neighborhoods, I asked for and secured the larger area. The dog park which will be located on the soccer fields near 11th & R is eagerly awaited. The park will open in the near future -- stay tuned for the ribbon-cutting date and time!
