July 8 ANC2C02 Public Meeting
7pm, Tuesday, July 8
Kennedy Recreation Center, 1401 7th St NW
I hope local residents will be able to join me and come out next Tuesday for some very informative discussions about our community.
Confirmed Guests:
- Third District MPD Commander George Kucik. The Metropolitan Police Department’s newly appointed Commander for the Third District Commander Kucik (“cue-sic”), George.Kucik@dc.gov, will give an update on local crime activity, Shotspotter technology in Shaw, and discuss concerns about the recent Supreme Court decision striking down the DC gun ban. Assistant Chief Diane Groomes has also been invited and will attend if her schedule permits.
- Liz Falk, of the Seventh Street Gardeners, will lead a discussion on “Bringing a Farmers Market to Shaw.” Convenient, affordable, healthy produce from local farmers is a good idea for Shaw especially when the “CityMarket at O” begins construction [ The7thStreetGarden.squarespace.com ]
- Christopher Ziemann, from the Department of Transportation, will discuss Pedestrian safety and plans for adding traffic calming features to our streets such as speed humps and raised crosswalks (see back page). Safety on our streets is important to everyone. The District Draft Pedestrian Master Plan report is now ready for public review here
Comments, Pingbacks:
Perhaps Mr Ziemann could briefly address the merits of closing a portion of 395 tunnel mentioned in the Post Sunday.
"Mayor Adrian M. Fenty's administration also is studying closing the section of the Interstate 395 tunnel that connects with New York Avenue NW, expanding the use of speed cameras and increasing parking fees and enforcement. Fees for encroaching on a crosswalk would increase from $50 to $500 under a pedestrian safety proposal. ...
The city has asked federal officials to consider closing the northern end of the I-395 tunnel to eliminate access to New York Avenue and Third Street NW. The tunnel runs under the Mall and is popular with Maryland commuters taking New York Avenue to Route 50 or the Baltimore-Washington Parkway. The tunnel is popular with Virginia commuters because I-395 links up with the 14th Street bridge across the Potomac River and to Route 1, I-95 and the George Washington Memorial Parkway in Virginia.
Moneme said city officials suspect that a significant number of commuters are using the tunnel as an alternative to the Capital Beltway and clogging New York Avenue in the process. He said the study is just to look at the "what-ifs" of closing the exit."
