the smallest kitten of the litter

deux cats
The kittens, though very small with very wobbly legs, have some very sharp claws and are impressive climbers. They can climb my legs up to my waist when I'm standing. Way beyond their level of safety. This is why we've kept them in a cage when they can't be watched. Last night one of them fell climbing inside the cage and apparently broke it's neck. It was paralyzed and unable to make a sound but breathing when I removed it from the cage. My neighbor helped me euthanize it in a plastic bag (after she helped me pull myself together). Bottle feeding for more than a week made us all very close. An old Bulgari box made for a nice coffin.

The other two (above) are as lively and loud as ever.

That sounds awful. i can't imagine, really. i'm sorry it happened. i can't figure how it happened. the cage isn't that big. i would call a vet and ask whether there's anything you can do to prevent it from happening again. probably not.

it just goes to show that babies are fragile and vulnerable, no matter the species. you just do the best you can to take care of them.

Mike,
It's also apparent that they really need their mother. They seem to be instinctively learning to clean themselves, but I'm sure the process would go much faster if their mother was there showing them how. They don't really seem to mind the warm baths I give them in the sink though.

Very sad. I'm so sorry.

The vet in Petworth on Georgia Ave is very good and affordable. I suggest taking any injured animal there. Metro Ferals volunteers are also always available to help. (My wife and I volunteer so you can email us.)

My new friend from MetroFerals is coming over this evening to check in on the other kittens and give them some de-worming meds. We went though a quick check list over the phone and verified that the other kittens don't have other symptoms that more commonly contribute to kitten mortality. Maybe I need a shorter cage though if such a thing exists. There's too much for them to climb in the house, if I were to let them roam free now. They don't have very good depth perception yet so letting them near the stairs is really not at option lest they fall off the sides.

handle them as much as you can when they're this age. they will become lap cats and enjoy being held as they evolve.
