Gentrification: Shiloh's Discussion with the Community

1-4pm, Saturday, October 13
Shiloh Baptist Church, 1510 9th Street NW (9th & P Streets NW)

As reported here and here and announced in my recent news alert (distributed at the Sept. ANC2C meeting), Shiloh Baptist Church will be hosting a discussion on the nebulous topic of "gentrification." I would like to add that both Commissioner Alexander M Padro and I will be speaking as panelists for this event. I encourage local residents to attend and contribute to the discussion.

UPDATE From Commissioner's Padro's announcement today:

Presenter: Margaret Simms, Senior Fellow, The Urban Institute and Former Interim President of the Joint Center For Economic and Political Studies — A community panel – “For and Against Gentrification” — will follow Dr. Simms’ presentation.
For More information, contact Dr. Barbara Hatcher (202/635-8926 or barbhatcher ]at[ att.net.

Is Shiloh a "gentrifier" because it fails to develop the church's vacant properties for affordable senior housing as purported in years past? And does it promote "gentrification" because it is reportedly — according to Pastor Smith and the WaPo — only just now renovating one of its properties at 1600 8th Street to turn it into luxury rental apartments?

The years of inaction — and yet to be seen development — does have a counterproductive effect to the displacement of Shaw seniors and those at the lower end of the economic scale. It's curious that Shiloh hosts a forum on gentrification when church representatives often seem more concerned with political power, parking, and race baiting spin tactics to suit their own selfish agenda.

For example, at the 4th annual Shaw Mainstreets developers showcase, the Shiloh representative did not ask questions about affordable housing or opportunities for seniors but rather asked about access to parking for it's non-Shaw parishoners.

i dont know why they dont follow the UHOP housing business model and do all luxury housing. Metropolitan Baptist has done it also and now both are rolling in the dough. With all do respect, Shiloh shouldn't be a landlord because they have proven they're not good custodians.
