Ghettos and Flowers
A neighbor was recently musing about neighborhood cleanups and politely waiting for neigbhors to form a large group to go out and pick up the bottles and cans and stuff on the streets in front of their homes en masse. Another neighbor has been criticising Kevin for the lack of positive action being addressed in his forum. I hope this addresses both issues:
This morning, while I was picking up bottles and cans and other things on the block that includes the Scott Montgomery Elementary School, I ran into Mr Cherry, an administrator at the school, who informed me that the graffiti removal truck has been out to the school this week and there were signs that some of the graffiti has been removed. Al-Hamdo Lillah.
My good neighbor to the north, I call him 007, took independent action earilier this week after the recent drug bust on the Scott Montgomery Elementary School yard Tuesday and removed the personal basketball equipment that the white-shirted [lets call them a "group"] "group" of youngsters (of the variety that Ms Brooks so eloquently spoke about at last night's PSA meeting) left on DCPS property. Mr Bond also called Mayor Fenty's Citywide Service Center to have the equipment removed as bulk trash or illegal dumping (reference numbers: 1475430 and 1475441).
Early this morning I noticed that the equipment had been dragged back to playground and a few students were using it. I kindly asked the two students to use the permanent DCPS basketball equipment while I went to work. The two children kindly obliged, without any extra information, reflecting a wisdom that belied their young age.
I moved the equipment as carefully as I could near the sidewalk and called Mayor Fenty's City Wide Service Center, (202) 727-1000, to schedule a pickup of the equipment which, Nancy, the operator, told me could be picked up since it was no longer on DCPS property. New service request reference number: 1477613.
I also passed along this information to Mayor Fenty's Ward 2 representatives Joseph Martin and Sean Howard and Jack Evans' Office and others so that they could follow up.
